Hamas confirms 10 fighters killed in operation

GAZA CITY (Ma'an) -- Hamas' al-Qassam Brigades declared Monday that 10 fighters were killed in an operation in eastern Beit Hanoun in northern Gaza Strip.

It said that early Monday 12 al-Qassam fighters infiltrated an Israeli military site in eastern Beit Hanoun.

The 12 split into two groups; the first fired an RPG shell at an Israeli military jeep completely burning it, while the other clashed with soldiers in another jeep.

While one of the groups was retreating it was targeted by Israeli warplanes, as the other group clashed with Israeli special forces.

10 al-Qassam fighters were killed during the operation; two returned safely.

The brigades highlighted that the operation was in retaliation for the "massacre" in the Shujaiyeh neighborhood of Gaza City on Sunday.

Israel's army spokesman confirmed that 10 Hamas fighters were killed.

"Hamas terrorists infiltrated Israel through two tunnels from north Gaza. IDF intercepted and killed more than 10 terrorists," Lieutenant Colonel Peter Lerner wrote on his Twitter feed.

Residents in Kissufim and nearby areas in southern Israel were told to stay in their homes and a main highway to Ashkelon was closed.

Israeli casualties were reported in the media although an Israeli military spokeswoman said she could not confirm the reports.
