Israel detains 11 Hamas lawmakers in West Bank

July 14, 2014 10:45 A.M. (Updated: July 14, 2014 8:20 P.M.)
SALFIT (Ma'an) -- Israeli forces on Monday detained eleven Hamas lawmakers in Nablus, Jenin and Salfit, security officials said.

Hamas lawmaker Daoud Abu Sir was detained in Nablus, together with An-Najah university professor Abdul Sattar Qasim.

Omar Abdul-Raziq, a Hamas and PLC member, was detained in Salfit.

Seven Israeli military vehicles stormed the Hebron town of Idhna and detained lawmaker Muhammad Mutliq Abu Juheisha, while Nayif Rajoub was detained in Dura.

Riyad al-Imlah was detained in Nablus, Khalid Said al-Dahbour in Jenin, Riyad Radad and Fathi al-Qaraawi in Tulkarem, Fadel Hamdan in Ramallah, and Muhammad al-Tall in Hebron.

Professor at al-Najah University Abdulsattar Qassem from Hebron was also detained early Monday.

The number of Palestinian lawmakers being held by Israel is now 34, 23 of whom had been arrested since mid-June.

At least 10 other Palestinians were detained in overnight arrest raids in Hebron.

The detainees were named by locals as Ulayyan Khader al-Qawasmi, Tamir Fawwaz al-Tawil, Anwar Suleiman al-Joulani, Tariq al-Tawil, Arafat al-Qawasmi, Jaafar al-Qawasmi and Wahib Walid Natshah, Adnan al-Zarou, and Anwar Abdul-Rahim al-Joulani.

In June, Israel launched a campaign aimed at crushing Hamas after it blamed the group for kidnapping and killing three Israeli youths.

Hamas categorically denied any involvement in the incident.

Over 600 Palestinians were detained during the campaign, including ex-prisoners and those released in a 2011 exchange deal.

Over 170 of those detained have been sentenced to administrative detention and Israeli forces killed at least six during arrest raids.
