Israeli forces make multiple arrests across West Bank

June 19, 2014 4:01 P.M. (Updated: June 20, 2014 10:34 A.M.)
BETHLEHEM (Ma'an) -- Israeli forces raided Palestinian towns and cities across the occupied West Bank on Thursday, in an ongoing crackdown on Palestinians since three teenagers disappeared a week earlier.

In the northern West Bank, Israeli forces carried out predawn raids in Nablus, nearby Balata refugee camp and Burqa village where they ransacked homes including several belonging to Palestinian security officers.

Locals in Balata told Ma’an that more than 10 Israeli military vehicles raided the camp and broke into several homes including home of Ibrahim Khalil Omar, a PA security officer. The homes of Sabir Ahmad al-Jarmi and Muhammad Ali Sheikh Khalil were ransacked among several others.

In Nablus, Israeli troops broke into several homes including that of Fatah leader Amin al-Jamil in the Old City, and they inspected his house thoroughly.

Israeli soldiers detained 38-year-old Hamas supporter Alaa Hassounah after raiding his home in the Rafidia neighborhood.

Israeli forces also stormed the homes of Palestinian security officers in the village of Burqa west of Nablus. Locals said the homes of Yousif Salah, Iyad Muhammad Salah Khalid Farouniya were raided.

Soldiers also stormed the home of Abdul-Rahim Seif, who was killed by Israeli forces years earlier.

North of Nablus, Israeli forces detained a Palestinian during clashes between dozens of residents and soldiers in Jenin refugee camp.

Four youths were injured. They were identified as Wahid al-Khoul, Baker al-Sabe, Younes Mjermi and Amin Zheirdi, and they were taken to Jenin's public hospital for treatment.

Palestinian security sources told Ma'an that more than 15 Israeli vehicles and patrols raided Jenin refugee camp while shooting into the air.

Israeli media reported that armed men threw two explosive devices at Israeli vehicles when they raided the camp, and no injuries were reported.

In separate raids, large numbers of Israeli troops stormed the campus of Birzeit University north of Ramallah and detained two students early on Thursday morning.

Sources in the administration told Ma'an that the two were on a sit-in strike inside campus protesting politically motivated detentions by Palestinian security services against activists who join rallies in support of hunger striking Palestinian prisoners.

The sources identified the two as Muhammad al-Arouri and Hisham Burhan.

They highlighted that Israeli soldiers locked the campus security guards in one room while they toured the campus for inspection. They added that soldiers fired stun grenades in campus.

In the Bethlehem area, Israeli forces detained three Palestinians on Thursday morning, according to locals.

They told Ma'an that Israeli forces raided Duheisha camp in southern Bethlehem, raided several houses two of which belong to the al-Daamsah and Qassem families, and detained Youssef Muhammed Adawi, 30.

Israeli forces raided al-Saff street in Bethlehem and detained Adnan Abdullah Qaddurah, 41, who is physically disabled.

Said Jaafar Amirah, 19, was also detained by Israeli forces after they raided and searched his father’s house in Husan village in Bethlehem.

Israeli forces raided the cities of Beit Jala, Bethlehem, Aida refugee camp, and al-Khader town and several other areas in Bethlehem for hours on Wednesday night.

Also in Bethlehem, Israeli forces raided Aida refugee camp Thursday afternoon.

Residents from the camp said Israeli forces shot tear gas, stun grenades and bullets at youths, and several Palestinians and families inhaled tear gas inside their homes.

Israeli forces were centered at al-Muftah area in the camp.

Repeated calls to Israel's military went unanswered Thursday.
