Israeli forces attack Arrub protest in solidarity with hunger strikers

May 31, 2014 10:29 P.M. (Updated: June 3, 2014 1:10 A.M.)
HEBRON (Ma'an) -- Israeli forces violently dispersed a protest in solidarity with hunger-striking prisoners near al-Arrub refugee camp on Friday, firing tear gas and stun grenades at dozens of demonstrators, activists said.

Palestinian and international activists participated in the protest organized by the Committee for the Defense of Hebron and political parties in the refugee camp, which is on the main road between Hebron and Bethlehem.

Protesters held pictures of Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails aloft and waved Palestinian flags as they chanted in solidarity with the more than 100 prisoners who have been on hunger strike for 38 days, as well as the hundreds more who have joined the strike since then.

Israeli forces prevented the the march from reaching the main road and shoved participants before showing them with tear gas, causing dozens to suffer from excessive tear gas inhalation.

Israeli forces detained Majid Tayser al-Titi, who was said to be around 17 years old, and photojournalist Abd al-Rahman Younes, prior to attacking participants.

An Israeli military spokeswoman said that the demonstration was composed of "40 who hurled rocks at securiy personnel," and that "soldiers

responded with riot dispersal means."

Although al-Arrub is deep in the occupied West Bank, it sits on a major road that connects numerous Jewish-only settlements in the region between Jerusalem and Hebron, as well Palestinians towns and cities.
