TEL AVIV, Israel (AFP) -- Pope Francis wrapped up his first papal pilgrimage to the Holy Land on Monday, flying out of Israel's Ben Gurion airport after a whirlwind three-day visit rich in religious and political symbolism.

The pope, who visited Jordan, the Palestinian territories and Israel on the visit he began on Saturday, left for Rome from the airport near Tel Aviv at 5:30 p.m., an AFP journalist reported.
