GAZA CITY (Ma'an) -- A 10-year-old child sustained severe injuries as a result of the explosion of a "suspicious object" in a neighborhood west of Khan Younis in the southern Gaza Strip Sunday morning.

Ashraf al-Qidrah, a spokesman for the health ministry in the Gaza Strip, identified the injured child as Tariq Abu Hamda.

He added that the boy suffered from shrapnel wounds all over his body, and his left hand had to be amputated at the Nasser Medical Center.

The circumstances of the explosion were not immediately clear.
