MOSCOW (Ma'an) -- President Mahmoud Abbas on Thursday called for Russia to have an essential role in the Israeli-Palestinian peace process, a Ma'an reporter said.

Abbas met with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin on Thursday in Novo-Ogaryovo in Russia, where he praised the country's recent roles in Syria and Iran.

Abbas briefed Putin on the updates in the region and on the peace process.

Putin called for the improvement of economic relations between Russia and the Palestinian Authority.

During his four-day visit to Russia, Abbas is also scheduled to meet Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev.
