Health service employees strike in West Bank

Jan. 12, 2014 6:25 P.M. (Updated: Jan. 12, 2014 6:25 P.M.)
BETHLEHEM (Ma'an) -- The Union of Health Service Employees for the Palestinian Ministry of Health began a general strike on Sunday, union sources told Ma'an.

Health service workers are protesting against an agreement to increase salaries for some employees but not for others.

The Palestinian government agreed to raise Health Ministry employees' salaries, citing the "hazardous" nature of their jobs, but decided not to raise the salaries of service employees, the Union of Medical Careers announced last Thursday.

Those exempt from salary increases include kitchen workers, laundry workers, maintenance workers, drivers, and registration officers.
