Israeli man stabbed in East Jerusalem

Jan. 11, 2014 10:28 P.M. (Updated: Jan. 12, 2014 11:10 A.M.)
JERUSALEM (Ma'an) -- A Jewish Israeli man was stabbed in Jerusalem on Saturday evening in an incident that local police forces suspect had "nationalist" motives.

Israeli sources said that a suspect who "seemed to be" a Palestinian stabbed a 30-year-old Israeli in the neck before fleeing in the direction of Highway 1.

Israeli newspaper the Jerusalem Post said the incident occurred in the vicinity of Damascus Gate in occupied East Jerusalem.

Israeli police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld was reported by the Jerusalem Post to have said that the assailant stabbed the victim from behind without provocation, referring to the stabbing as most probably a "terrorist attack."

Israeli police forces are still searching for the suspect.

Palestinian sources referred to the Israeli victim as a "settler," but it was unclear where he was from.

Ambulance crews from Magen David Adom hospital arrived on the scene to treat the victim before transferring him to Shaare Zedek Hospital.

His injuries were described as moderate.
