JENIN (Ma’an) – Among the 26 Palestinian prisoners expected to be released overnight is the founder of the Fatah-affiliated Black Panthers organization in the northern West Bank.
Ahmad Awad Kamil has been serving 16 life terms and 20 more years in Israeli jails.
“I am now 83, and very frankly and honestly I never expected my son to be freed while I am alive,” Kamil’s father told Ma’an.
Hajj Awad Abu Ali added that Israeli forces ambushed and detained his son near the Jenin area village of al-Zababdah 20 years ago. He has been moved from one prison to another since then.
“The way I feel today is indescribable and my happiness is far greater than what a normal person can feel.”
He highlighted that his son’s daughter Ansar graduated with a degree in medicine. Kamil also has two sons, Muaataz and Muhammad.
The father thanked President Mahmoud Abbas for “the huge efforts he exerted to set veteran prisoners free.”
