Birzeit professor and economist dies at 48

BETHLEHEM (Ma'an) -- Palestinian economist and lecturer Basim Makhoul died in Ramallah on Sunday at the age of 48.

Locals told Ma'an that Makhoul died of a sudden illness while he was shoveling snow that had piled around his house in Ramallah.

Makhoul is originally from the northern West Bank village of Attil in Qalqiliya district. He studied industrial economics in the United States, and lectured at al-Najah University in Nablus from 1994 to 2010.

He then began working at Birzeit University in Ramallah.
