Abbas offers condolences for death of Haniyeh's granddaughter

Nov. 27, 2013 8:53 P.M. (Updated: Nov. 27, 2013 10:41 P.M.)
GAZA CITY (Ma'an) -- Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas on Wednesday offered his condolences to Gaza Prime Minister Ismael Haniyeh for the death of his granddaughter.

The Hamas leader's one-year-old granddaughter, Amal Abd al-Salam Haniyeh, died Wednesday from a digestive infection that damaged her brain.

Amal, the daughter of Haniyeh's eldest son Abd al-Salam, was pronounced clinically dead on Nov. 18 after being treated in an Israeli hospital.

Following the victory of Hamas in the 2006 Palestinian elections and the subsequent 2007 clashes between Fatah and Hamas, Hamas was left in control of the Gaza Strip and Fatah in control of the West Bank.
