Man in lawyer's uniform 'fires at defendant in court'

Nov. 14, 2013 7:23 P.M. (Updated: Nov. 15, 2013 7:32 P.M.)
NABLUS (Ma'an) -- A Palestinian man disguised as a lawyer fired at a defendant at a court in Nablus in the northern West Bank on Thursday, a court official said.

Raed Assaf, spokesman of the Palestinian Higher Judicial Council, said the shooter wore a lawyer uniform and presented himself as a lawyer from Ramallah.

"After the hearing was over, the man pulled out a handgun and fired four gunshots at a defendant Muhammad Hifnawi." The defendant sustained a minor wound from shrapnel.

The court’s security guards arrested the suspected shooter and he was taken into custody.

The suspect was not identified and it was not clear if he had a lawyer.

Assaf highlighted that the suspect accused the defendant of causing the death of his brother in Balata refugee camp in Nablus a few months earlier.

Palestinian police forces deployed heavily in the area and started to investigate the case.

Court security guards are not allowed to inspect lawyers before they go into the court hall, according to Palestinian law.
