PA public workers' union to launch open-ended strike

NABLUS (Ma'an) -- The Palestinian Authority's Public Workers' Union announced Sunday that it will launch an open-ended general strike on Wednesday effective across all governmental offices in the West Bank.

The head of the union, Bassam Zakarneh, said Sunday that the union is still firm on its position regarding the need for the Palestinian Authority to add cost of living increases to the wages of all public employees without exception.

"The union respects President Abbas' position and his instructions to commence a serious dialogue with the Palestinian government. However, before any dialogue, the government should recognize rights of Palestinian employees," Zakarneh said.

Zakarneh confirmed that the primary demand of the union in the strike is to achieve cost of living increases across the board.

Zakarneh added that he already began contacts for dialogue with the Palestinian government, and that the Association Council will meet next Tuesday in Ramallah to evaluate these contacts between the government and the union.

The union is waiting for the Palestinian government to make a decision regarding the high cost of living and to answer the other demands, he added.
