JERUSALEM (Ma’an) -- A former Palestinian prisoner from Eisawiya in East Jerusalem died Thursday in an accident at a construction site, Israeli police said.

Ata Ubeid, in his 40s, fell after suffering an electric shock while working on scaffolding in an industrial zone in Israel. Medics could not resuscitate him, police said in a statement.

Israeli police and labor ministry inspectors have visited the site and opened an investigation.

Ata Ubeid was an activist with Islamist groups and was imprisoned three times for a total of nine years. He was last released in July.
