Egyptian troops 'fired at' from Gaza Strip

Aug. 17, 2013 9:44 A.M. (Updated: Aug. 21, 2013 5:13 P.M.)
EL-ARISH, Egypt (Ma'an) -- Egyptian troops stationed along the border with the Gaza Strip came under heavy fire from the Palestinian enclave early Saturday, an Egyptian military intelligence official said.

The official, who spoke to Ma'an on condition of anonymity, said no injuries were reported.

Palestinian sources in Rafah, a town straddling the Gaza-Egypt border, said smugglers had opened fire at the Egyptian forces.

A network of tunnels runs under the border to smuggle goods into the besieged Gaza Strip.
