Bethlehem man shot dead on coast of Jordanian Dead Sea

April 23, 2013 12:48 P.M. (Updated: April 24, 2013 10:48 P.M.)
BETHLEHEM (Ma'an) -- A man from Bethlehem was shot dead Monday night on the Jordanian side of the Dead Sea, security sources said.

Salih Jahalin's body was found off the Jordanian coast of the Dead Sea, security sources told Ma'an, adding that it appeared he died trying to return to Jordan.

Jahalin, a Bedouin from al-Khader south of Bethlehem, was released from Israeli jail in Dec. 2011. He had served over nine years for affiliation to Fatah and smuggling weapons via the Dead Sea during the second intifada.

On his release, local sources said he continued to smuggle weapons even though Israeli forces had declared the Dead Sea a closed military zone during evening hours.

His body is still in Jordan and it is not yet clear when it will be delivered to the Palestinian side.
