19-year-old woman burns to death in Gaza camp

GAZA CITY (Ma'an) -- A 19-year-old woman died from burns on Tuesday in Jabaliya refugee camp in the northern Gaza Strip, police said.

Police spokesman Ayman al-Batneiji said the woman's body was brought to the Kamal Udwan Hospital in Beit Lahiya early Tuesday morning.

"An initial medical examination showed burns all over the body," al-Batneiji told Ma'an. He said police were investigating the death but denied reports the woman's husband had set fire to her.

Locals in Jabaliya told Ma'an the woman set fire to herself. They said she had suffered a nervous breakdown after she was physically abused by her husband of 18 months, with whom she had a 6-month-old baby.
