Group: Palestinians killed in Syria camps

Feb. 8, 2013 5:10 P.M. (Updated: Feb. 9, 2013 3:26 P.M.)
BETHLEHEM (Ma’an) -- Two Palestinians died Friday after being shot by snipers in a Syrian refugee camp, and medics discovered the body of a young girl killed by shelling, activists said.

A Palestinian monitoring group in Syria said the two young men from al-Hassineh refugee camp were found dead Friday. The camp has been under blockade for 75 days.

Meanwhile the body of Reem Qanou, a young girl, was found three days after shelling in Yarmouk, Syria's largest refugee camp, according to the group.

The Palestinian working group said in a statement Friday that elements within the Free Syrian Army took control of 30th street in Yarmouk and clashed with the regime army Thursday.

Separately, a fire broke out in Yarmouk Street and intensified due to a lack of necessary equipment to extinguish it. Snipers attacked people trying to put out the blaze, according to the group.

At al-Hassineh refugee camp, Syrian security forces were not letting medical supplies or food into the camp, and bakeries have stopped working due to the blockade, activists said.

Meanwhile heavy shelling has led to a state of panic in Daraa refugee camp.

"Alongside Syrians, Palestine refugees who live in significant numbers in Rif Damascus are being killed, seriously injured, and displaced in much larger numbers than before," the UN refugee agency for Palestinians UNRWA said in a statement Friday.

"UNRWA deplores the suffering inflicted on civilians in Syria and calls on all sides to do everything possible to ease it, including refraining from conducting the conflict in residential areas," it said.

"All sides must conduct themselves in ways that safeguard human life; protect civilians; ensure safe and free movement for civilians and allow unimpeded access to UNRWA and other humanitarian agencies."
