Fatah official: Anniversary celebrations a success

GAZA CITY (Ma'an) -- Celebrations to mark the 48th anniversary since Fatah's founding passed successfully, a Fatah official said Friday.

Jamal Obeid applauded the large numbers of people who turned out for the celebrations, praising what he called "unprecedented participation."

A number of the festival's planned events had to be canceled, however, Obeid said. A planned speech by PLO official Nabil Shaath was canceled and a speech by Hamas officials had to be removed from the day's itinerary.

"Fatah telephoned to ask Hamas representatives not to come to the festival because the organizers lost control of the celebration stage," Hamas spokesman Sami Abu Zuhri said.

Several Fatah leaders telephoned Hamas premier Ismail Haniyeh to thank him for his efforts and the cooperation of Hamas.
