'New brigade' announces third intifada from Hebron

Dec. 15, 2012 7:26 P.M. (Updated: Dec. 16, 2012 5:09 P.M.)
BETHLEHEM (Ma'an) -- A video released on Friday purports to show a group of Palestinians announcing the formation of a new military brigade, which it said would start a new uprising against Israel beginning in the West Bank city of Hebron.

The video, posted on YouTube on Friday, shows eight people covering their faces with scarves and holding a Quran.

"We hereby, from the heart of the West Bank, in the revolutionary city of Hebron, declare the establishment of the National Unity Brigades in the Hebron district," one of the groups says.

"We announce that our brigades include supporters of al-Yasin (Hamas leader Sheikh Ahmad Yasin), al-Yasser (Fatah leader Yasser Arafat), al-Shiqaqi (Islamic Jihad leader Fathi al-Shiqaqi), and (PFLP leader) Abu Ali Mustafa."

"Our brigades support the Palestinian president Mahmoud Abbas' decision to announce a Palestinian state, and we will not cede a grain of sand of the Palestinian land from the sea to the river."

He outlines the demands of the group as the removal of Israeli checkpoints and a military withdrawal from the West Bank, the release of Palestinian prisoners jailed in Israel, the return of Palestinian revenues seized by the Israeli government, and the opening of crossings into the Gaza Strip as well as facilitating water and electricity services.

"Our message to the whole world and to the Zionist enemy is that our brigades declare the beginning of a third Palestinian Intifada from the heart of Hebron to extend to the rest of Palestine," the speaker says in the video.

"You should know Zionists that if you detain our people, we will kidnap your soldiers, and if you kill our people, we will kill. We will use an iron fist against you using all the power we have if you don't bring an end to this arrogance against our Palestinian people."

The killing of 17-year-old Muhammad Salaymeh by Israeli forces at a Hebron checkpoint this week sparked outrage and protests in the southern West Bank city.

During the Israeli war on Gaza last month, 22-year-old Hamdi al-Falah was also shot dead by troops in the city during a solidarity demonstration.
