BETHLEHEM (Ma'an) -- President Mahmoud Abbas congratulated Barack Obama on Wednesday after he was re-elected as president of the United States, a statement said.

Abbas said that he hopes Obama will continue with efforts to achieve peace in the Middle East.

Obama, America's first black president, won by convincing voters to stick with him as he tries to reignite strong economic growth and recover from the worst recession since the Great Depression of the 1930s.
