Rafah crossing stays open over Eid holiday

Oct. 29, 2012 10:44 A.M. (Updated: Oct. 30, 2012 3:56 P.M.)
GAZA CITY (Ma'an) -- The Gaza Strip's crossing into Egypt has stayed open in both directions during the Eid al-Adha holiday for the first time in years, Palestinian crossings officials said Sunday.

The facility, the only exit point for Palestinians in Gaza not falling under Israel's blockade, has also been recently been opened on the weekend holiday of Friday.

Crossing officials describe the improvement of access is part of Egypt's promise to help ease the situation in Gaza, which is under an Israeli land and sea blockade.

Local officials said around five buses of passengers have left each day during Eid without any problems.
