PA pledges to pay partial salaries before Eid

Oct. 14, 2012 1:23 P.M. (Updated: Oct. 16, 2012 3:07 P.M.)
BETHLEHEM (Ma'an) -- Palestinian Authority government salaries for last month will be paid in part in the coming few days, the ministry of finance announced on Sunday.

Ministry spokesman Rami Mahdawi said a portion of the salaries would be spent before the Eid al-Adha holiday on Oct. 26.

He said Israeli transfer of customs revenues it collects on the PA's behalf would not cover half the expenses of government salaries, noting that Israel withheld money to pay the Israeli electricity company because of unpaid debts by the Palestinian power provider.

He also noted that PA is still waiting for pledged support from Arab countries in order to pay its employees September salaries.

Last month Israel advanced part of the 260 million shekels ($66 million) customs revenues to the financially beleaguered PA, but withheld 35 million shekels ($9 million) for electricity debts.

Amid mounting debts, the Palestinian Authority in the West Bank has repeatedly delayed and paid in part its employees' salaries.

Employees of the Hamas government in Gaza are set to receive their September salaries on Sunday.
