Egypt to re-open Rafah crossing three days a week

Aug. 23, 2012 9:51 A.M. (Updated: Aug. 24, 2012 12:53 P.M.)
GAZA CITY (Ma’an) -- Egyptian authorities have decided to re-open the Rafah crossing three days a week starting next week, the director of the pedestrian crossing said Thursday.

"The Egyptian authorities informed us that the crossing will be re-opened in both sides on Saturdays, Mondays and Wednesdays," Ayoub Abu Shaar, the director of the Palestinian side, said in a statement.

After gunmen killed 16 Egyptian border guards in early August, Egypt closed its border with the Gaza Strip and sealed smuggling tunnels that provide a lifeline to the besieged territory.
