Palestine attending UN conference on geographic names

Aug. 8, 2012 5:02 P.M. (Updated: Aug. 9, 2012 6:26 P.M.)
RAMALLAH (Ma'an) -- The Palestinian Authority ministry of planning and public works managed to get Palestine on the agenda for the UN's 10th conference on the standardization of geographical names, officials said Wednesday.

The conference is being held through the first two weeks of August in New York.

The ministry, representing the National Committee of Geographic Names in Palestine, is presenting an outline and summary of achievements in the field. One of these is documenting the geographic names in both English and Arabic for all Palestinian cities and villages in the West Bank.

The conference on the standardization of geographical names concludes on Aug. 9. It is held every five years to adopt resolutions and ensure that past agreements are implemented.

The ninth conference was held in 2007 with two sessions in Nairobi and Vienna.
