Report: PA official visits Auschwitz camp memorial

July 27, 2012 8:52 P.M. (Updated: July 30, 2012 10:13 A.M.)
NEW YORK (Ma'an) -- A Palestinian Authority official visited the Nazi death camp of Auschwitz on Friday to pay respect to the victims, The Associated Press reported.

Ziad al-Bandak, an adviser to President Abbas on Christian affairs, visited the camp after an invitation from a private Polish foundation which promotes tolerance.

Al-Bandak visited the gas chambers, a crematorium and prisoner cells, before laying a wreath of flowers at the Death Wall where Polish resistance fighters were summarily executed.

In 2007, the Palestinian and Israeli ambassadors to Poland made a joint visit to the camp.

Some 1.5 million people, mainly Jews, were killed in the camp's gas chambers or died of starvation, disease and forced labor.
