Mashaal visits Cairo during Abbas-Mursi meeting

July 18, 2012 2:01 P.M. (Updated: July 19, 2012 11:30 A.M.)
GAZA CITY (Ma'an) -- Hamas politburo chief Khalid Mashaal arrived in the Egyptian capital on Wednesday morning, a visit which coincides with President Mahmoud Abbas' meeting with the newly-elected Egyptian president.

Mashaal will spend two days in Cairo to discuss the situation in Palestine and the reconciliation process with Abbas' Fatah faction, a statement from Hamas said.

President Mahmoud Abbas arrived in Egypt on Tuesday evening, and Fatah said he would brief Egyptian President Muhammad Mursi on relations with Israel and the stalled reconciliation process with Hamas.

It was not immediately clear if Mashaal and Abbas would meet during their visits.

The factions signed a reconciliation agreement in May 2011 to end four years of divided governments in the Gaza Strip and West Bank, but its implementation has repeatedly stalled.
