RAMALLAH (Ma’an) -- An accident involving fireworks injured 28 people, including four seriously, late Thursday at a wedding hall in northern Ramallah, medical officials said.
Two people were in critical condition and ambulances were rushing to evacuate the injured. The explosion was the result of fireworks being set off in front of the hall, leading to serious injuries.
Ramallah police spokesman Fareed Ladawdeh authorities rushed to the area and opened an investigation, but were prioritizing the treatment of injured and transferring patients to hospitals.
He urged the public to stop shooting fireworks at weddings and called the practice a "real hazard."
On Friday, Palestinian police seized more than 200 cartons of fireworks in Ramallah and the Al-Bireh governorate during a campaign to crack down on the explosives, officials said.
A police statement reported arrests, but did not identify the suspects or say how many were detained. The statement said police would track down those involved in importing or trading such material.
