PA calls on Israel to release Hana Shalabi

BETHLEHEM (Ma'an) -- The Palestinian Authority on Tuesday called for Israel to release a female detainee who has been on hunger strike in Israeli jail for 13 days.

Hana Shalabi started a hunger strike on Feb. 16 after she was re-arrested by Israeli forces, despite being freed in a prisoner swap deal in October.

Previously held for 25 months without charge, she is now back in jail under the same administrative detention regime.

"It is time for the unethical administrative detention policy to end," a statement from the government's weekly cabinet meeting said.

Head of the Palestinian prisoners society Qadura Fares says 310 Palestinians are currently held in administrative detention, and since the prisoner swap, 15 Palestinians have been rearrested and six are still in jail.
