PA welcomes French report on Israel water control

Jan. 17, 2012 5:49 P.M. (Updated: Jan. 18, 2012 9:27 P.M.)
BETHLEHEM (Ma'an) -- The Ramallah-based cabinet on Monday welcomed a French parliamentary report that said Israel's control of Palestinian water resources broke international law.

The document published by French parliament's Foreign Affairs Committee in early January says Israeli dominance of water for settlements and Israel is "a weapon serving the new apartheid," according to the Israeli daily Haaretz.

The Palestinian Authority government is working to stop "Israeli attacks against the Palestinian people’s rights to their own natural resources as stipulated by international law and the United Nations General Assembly’s recent resolution regarding Palestine’s sovereignty over its natural resources," a cabinet statement said.

France's report said "water purification facilities planned by the Palestinian Water Ministry are being 'blocked' by the Israeli administration."

Diverting water to residents of illegal settlements in the West Bank, bombing of Gaza water reservoirs, and "systematic destruction" of water wells in the West Bank, are preventing Palestinian access to water, it noted.
