Israeli forces arrest 16 people across West Bank

Jan. 12, 2012 9:31 A.M. (Updated: Jan. 13, 2012 2:27 P.M.)
NABLUS (Ma’an) -- Israeli military forces arrested 16 people overnight Wednesday and early Thursday, the army and local officials said.

An Israeli army spokeswoman said four people were arrested in Madama village, Nablus, four in Asira al-Qibliya, also in Nablus, three people in al-Mughayyir village, northeast of Ramallah, and five people southwest of Jericho.

Head of Madama village council Ihab al-Qitt told Ma'an that Israeli tanks raided the village at 2 a.m. and arrested Muhammad Sadeq Qitt, 22, Ahmad Atef Ziyada, 21, and Mahmoud Abdullah al-Qitt, 23, after ransacking their homes.

A report published in December 2011 by researcher on prisoner affairs Abdul Nasser Ferwaneh found that over 3,000 Palestinians were arrested by Israel's military in 2011.

Since 1967, Israel has detained more than 750,000 Palestinians, including women and children, Palestinian Authority reports say. Around 40 percent of men living in the occupied territories have been detained by Israel at some point in their lives.
