Report: Israel to indict army officer for fatal shooting

TEL AVIV, Israel (Ma'an) -- Israel will indict an army reserves officer who shot a Palestinian in the back and killed him, reports in the Israeli media said Wednesday.

The commander, "a well-known religious Zionist educator" who was not otherwise identified, opened fire in contravention of the rules of engagement, a report in Israel's Haaretz newspaper said.

The move is a rare event. Haaretz said that from 2002-2009, only 14 indictments were filed over the deaths of Palestinian civilians, according to the Yesh Din organization.

The organization says 173 cases were investigated during the same period.
