Abbas requests emergency Security Council session

Aug. 20, 2011 1:14 P.M. (Updated: Aug. 21, 2011 4:17 P.M.)
RAMALLAH (Ma’an) -- President Mahmoud Abbas has requested a session of the UN Security Council to address Israel's deadly operations in the Gaza Strip, a PLO official said Saturday.

Saeb Erekat said Abbas' request for an emergency meeting came as Palestinian officials in Ramallah attempted to calm a "dangerous escalation against the Gaza Strip and to stop the killing of civilians there."

Abbas authorized Palestinian envoy to the UN Riyad Mansour to call the meeting, according to a report from the official Palestinian Authority news agency Wafa late Friday.
