Hamas ministry condemns Israel's treatment of sick detainees

BETHLEHEM (Ma'an) -- The Hamas Ministry of Detainee Affairs on Monday condemned Israeli authorities for their treatment of sick prisoners.

Detainee Zakariyah Issa, from Al-Khader village near Bethlehem, has cancer which has spread throughout his body. He is in a coma but Israeli authorities refuse to release him, ministry spokesman Riyad Al-Ashkar said.

Al-Ashkar said medics at Soroka prison hospital had described Issa's condition as "critical" and said his health was deteriorating.

The ministry official said Israel's treatment of detainees was becoming "more brutal" and that detainees must be treated as human beings.
