Erekat: UN bid not coordinated with Hamas

Aug. 10, 2011 10:15 P.M. (Updated: Aug. 12, 2011 3:11 A.M.)
BETHLEHEM (Ma’an) -- There has been no coordination between Fatah and Hamas over the Palestinian UN bid for statehood in September, PA official Saeb Erekat told Ma'an on Wednesday.

“Unfortunately, there has been no coordination so far with Hamas, but the door is open and we welcome them any time.”

The PA has created a higher committee to coordinate the September bid and it is ready to host any Palestinian faction, Erekat said.

The PA would not give up on the September bid, he added, highlighting that the Palestinians have managed to gain unprecedented support from Arab countries, as well as internationally.

The UN bid is just one step towards statehood and there should be a Palestinian strategy to embody statehood on the ground.

“Ninety five percent of Israel’s negotiation behavior takes place outside of negotiation rooms, and they spread rumors which we would not even listen to because they are way too far from reality,” Erekat told Ma'an.

Separately, a Hamas delegation headed by Khalid Mashaal visited the Qatari capital Doha Wednesday to update the Emir of Qatar on developments in Palestine.

Emir of Qatar Sheikh Hamad Ben Khalifa Al Thani hosted the Hamas delegation and discussed recent developments in the region and Palestinian issues such as reconciliation between Hamas and Fatah.

The delegation included Mousa Abu Marzouq, deputy politburo chief, Izzat Ar-Rishiq, Muhammad Nasr and Khalil Al-Hayyah.

Deputy prime minister of Qatar Abdullah Ben Hamad Al-Atiyyah attended the meeting with Sheikh Hamad.
