Hamas FM: Unity government must be formed urgently

Aug. 1, 2011 6:29 P.M. (Updated: Aug. 2, 2011 12:54 P.M.)
GAZA CITY (Ma'an) -- A united Palestinian government must be formed urgently ahead of Palestine's bid for membership of the United Nations in September, Foreign Minister in Gaza Muhammad Awad said Monday.

Awad, who is also planning minister in the Gaza-based authority, said a united government was important for a strong Palestine during a seminar at the Ministry of Planning in Gaza City.

Palestinian factions agreed to form a unity government in the reconciliation agreement signed in Cairo in May.

The agreement was set to end years of hostility between Hamas, which governs the Gaza Strip, and Fatah, which leads the Palestinian Authority in the West Bank.

Attempts to form a unity government stalled over a leadership row, as Hamas rejected Fatah's nomination of PA Prime Minister Salam Fayyad to lead the new government.
