Israel closes sole Gaza crossing for goods and aid

June 10, 2011 12:07 P.M. (Updated: June 10, 2011 6:52 P.M.)
GAZA CITY (Ma'an) -- Israeli authorities decided to close Gaza's sole operating crossing for goods and aid until Sunday, Palestinian officials said.

Liaison official Raed Fattouh said he was informed that Israel would close the southernmost Kerem Shalom crossing on Friday and Saturday.

Since Israel closed all other border terminals, Kerem Shalom is the only entry point for commercial goods and humanitarian aid into the besieged coastal enclave, home to over 1.6 million Palestinians.

Israel imposes an illegal naval blockade on the Gaza Strip and controls the territory's airspace.

Egypt ended its role in Israel's siege on May 28, permanently reopening the Rafah crossing on its border with Gaza.

While the decision allowed the free movement of most Gaza residents for the first time in four years, the terminal is not equipped for the import or export of goods or aid.
