Witnesses: Crossing closed due to suspicious object

April 13, 2011 6:47 P.M. (Updated: April 14, 2011 12:50 A.M.)
BETHLEHEM (Ma'an) -- The Israeli army closed the Qalandiya checkpoint around 3 p.m. Wednesday, witnesses said, saying that it would be re-opened a day later after a suspicious object was examined and moved.

A border police spokesman said, however, that the crossing was operating normally.

Palestinians at the checkpoint told Ma’an that the army stopped hundreds of cars from traveling in either direction between Ramallah and Jerusalem, explaining that they were dismantling an object. They said troops told residents the border would close and to return tomorrow.

Qalandiya is a military checkpoint between East Jerusalem and the central West Bank district of Ramallah and Al-Bireh, and a main crossing point for Palestinians best the West Bank and Jerusalem.
