Official: Egypt won’t abandon reconciliation file

April 12, 2011 8:32 P.M. (Updated: April 13, 2011 3:09 P.M.)
BETHLEHEM (Ma’an) -- The Egyptian ambassador to the Palestinian Authority, Yasser Othman, has denied reports that Cairo handed the Palestinian reconciliation file to Syria.

Othman told Ma’an radio that Egypt's leadership would not abandon the issue. He added the Palestinian-Egyptian relations are the same and did not change despite the revolution.

However, he said reconciliation was unlikely in the near future, according to the results of the latest round of meetings in Cairo.

He highlighted the historical relationship between Egypt and Palestine saying that “although the Egyptian leadership is busy dealing with the internal situation especially post-revolution, they were not hesitant in helping the Palestinians in solving their internal and external issues, especially Israel's aggression.”

He said Egypt's leadership intervened immediately in the latest violence in Gaza.
