Last group of Palestinian students leave Libya

March 6, 2011 5:55 P.M. (Updated: March 7, 2011 9:28 A.M.)
TRIPOLI, Libya (Ma'an) -- All Palestinian students have left Libya, as battles between opposition forces and regime loyalists rage across the north African country, said Palestinian Ambassador in Tripoli Atif Mustafa Auda.

Auda told Ma'an radio that the final group of 13 students left via Tripoli International Airport on Sunday.

The Palestinian embassy evacuated a total of 104 students from across the country following orders from President Mahmoud Abbas, Auda said.

On Tuesday, Palestinian military intelligence director Nidhal Abu Dukhan told Ma'an that while Palestinian officials had been in constant contact with the students, limited resources meant the Palestinian Authority had been slower than other countries to evacuate nationals.

"Frankly speaking, the PA does not have any fleets or warships to send to Libya to evacuate the Palestinians. However, we await any opportunity to evacuate them safely to the airport, then the homeland," he explained.
