Municipal hunger strikers hospitalized

Feb. 14, 2011 4:19 P.M. (Updated: Feb. 15, 2011 7:27 A.M.)
JENIN (Ma'an) -- Four employees of the Jenin municipality were hospitalized Monday after going on hunger strike to demand better conditions, a workers' committee spokesman said.

The hunger strike began Sunday, and would continue until all demands were met, Estety said.

He added that 22 employees have been holding a sit-in at the municipality for over a week.

Sufyan Estety said the Palestinian Red Crescent transported Muhannad Abu Al-Hayja, Jamal Abu Seryeh, Mujahed Saqallah and Jalal Azzawi to the Jenin Hospital.

Azzawi's condition is deteriorating, the spokesman added.

Estety said the committee held the Ministry of Local Governance and Jenin municipality fully responsible for the workers' health.
