Israel army shuts down Hebron rally

Feb. 11, 2011 6:46 P.M. (Updated: Feb. 11, 2011 10:35 P.M.)
HEBRON (Ma’an) -- Israeli forces on Friday shut down a rally against a marathon held by settlers in the center of the West Bank city of Hebron, protest organizers said.

Youth Against Settlements organized the rally to protest the race and demand the reopening of Shuhuda Street to Palestinians. The road was on the route of the Jewish-only race, an event supported by the Israeli Ministry of Sport for settlers across the West Bank.

Palestinians, Israelis and international activists demonstrated at the western entrance to the street, holding flags and banners demanding an end to racial discrimination.

Demonstrators said Israeli forces formed a wall around the protest and declared the area a closed military zone. Soldiers also ordered journalists to leave the area, Youth Against Settlements coordinator Issa Amer said.

An Israeli military spokesman said forces shut down a "riot" but did not use riot dispersal means. He said the area was not declared a closed military zone.
