Workers hurt by gunfire in north Gaza

Feb. 5, 2011 12:30 P.M. (Updated: Feb. 6, 2011 11:56 A.M.)
GAZA CITY (Ma’an) -- Israeli forces shot and injured three Palestinians in the Gaza Strip while they were collecting stones, medics said.

Gaza medical official Adham Abu Salmeya said a 22-year-old man was hit by a gunshot to the pelvic cavity, and another 19-year-old was hit in his right foot as they were collecting aggregates east of Gaza City’s Shuja’iyya neighborhood.

They were evacuated to Ash-Shifa Hospital in Gaza City for treatment, Abu Salmeya said.

He added that a 42-year-old man sustained a moderate injury while collecting stone aggregates north of Beit Lahiya in the northern Gaza strip. He was evacuated to Kamal Udwan Hospital.

The shooting brings the toll for injuries in that area to 118 since March 2010, he said.

An Israeli military spokeswoman confirmed reports that one man was injured.

She said soldiers opened fire when a Palestinian approaching the border area ignored warning shots. Soldiers fired at the man's lower body, she said.

The area is considered a combat zone and it is prohibited to enter it, she added.
