Israeli army opens fire at Gaza worker

Dec. 28, 2010 4:16 P.M. (Updated: Dec. 29, 2010 10:41 A.M.)
GAZA CITY (Ma'an) -- Israeli forces shot a Palestinian worker on Tuesday east of Gaza City, local medics said.

The 19-year-old was collecting cement aggregates near the border area when he was shot, and was transferred to hospital with moderate injuries, a medical official said.

An Israeli military spokeswoman said forces opened fire at two men in the area, which, she reiterated, Israel considers a combat zone. She noted that soldiers "did not identify a hit."

Israel's military has shot over 100 Palestinians working close to the coastal enclave's border with Israel since March, the Hamas-run Health Ministry said.

Workers head to the border area and collect rubble to make cement, which is in short supply in the Strip under Israel's blockade.
