Israel frees soldiers who endangered human life

Nov. 21, 2010 11:04 A.M. (Updated: Nov. 22, 2010 9:48 P.M.)
JERUSALEM (DPA) -- An Israeli military court defied prosecutors Sunday and handed down only suspended sentences to two soldiers convicted of using a Palestinian boy as a "human shield" during Israel's Gaza offensive at the turn of 2008-2009.

The two, from an infantry brigade, were given three months probation, and demoted one rank, from staff-sergeant to sergeant.

The prosecution had recommended they be sent to jail, and demoted to the rank of private, Israeli media reported.

The court had convicted the two in October, finding them guilty of inappropriate behavior and endangering human life, when, during the fighting on 15 January 2009, they asked a Palestinian boy to open a bag suspected of containing a bomb.

Military investigators launched a probe into the incident last July, after receiving a UN report on children in armed conflict.

A United Nations report compiled after the brutal 33-day war between Israel and the Gaza militias accused both sides of committing war crimes, and demanded they launch credible investigations.
