Hamas: PA night raids target 2 leaders

Sept. 12, 2010 12:54 P.M. (Updated: Sept. 13, 2010 12:43 P.M.)
NABLUS (Ma’an) -- Hamas officials in the West Bank accused Palestinian Authority security services of raiding the homes of two leaders overnight on Saturday and detained relatives of the men.

A statement released by officials on Sunday said the Nablus homes of Sheikh Hamed Bitawi, elected to the Palestinian Legislative Council in 2006, and a second Hamas leader Majed Hamami.

In Bitawi's home, forces reportedly detained Fadel Al-Bitawi, son of the PLC member, and Hamami himself was taken by the officers.

Ma'an could not independently verify the claims, which come as Hamas and Fatah continue allegations of politically-motivated detentions across the West Bank and Gaza.

Hamas opposes the Ramallah government's decision to return to peace talks with Israel, and militant groups affiliated with the movement claimed two shooting attacks on Israeli settlers in the West Bank, which killed four and injured two. PA forces began a sweep, targeting what rights groups say was hundreds of Hamas members and affiliates, in what they said was part of an investigation into the two attacks.
