Jenin cinema opens to fanfare

JENIN (Ma'an) -- The northern West Bank city of Jenin is celebrating its cinema's re-opening with a three-day film festival that kicked of Thursday afternoon.

Closed in wake of the First Intifada in 1987, Cinema Jenin was remolded in a two-year program sponsored in part by the Germany.

With plush seats for more than 300, an adjacent gallery space, an outdoor cafe, a small children's park, and a library sponsored by Germany's Goethe-Institut, the cinema will provide space for German courses and cultural exhibitions hoped to ensure that it becomes a center for artistic expression.

The cinema, located in the city center, joins the Jenin Freedom Theatre as the second popular project focusing on the visual and performance arts.

Partnered with the Cinema Jenin Association, a statement from the German consular office in Ramallah said that "the driving force behind the project [was] German film-maker Marcus Vetter, best known to the German public for his film Heart of Jenin."

Several German companies, private individuals and organizations were also said to have helped sponsor the project.

As the second cinema to reopen in the West Bank, Cinema Jenin follows Nablus' Cinema City, and the northern West Bank now boasts the only two dedicated Palestinian movie cinemas.

A program for the opening of the cinema can be found on its website.
