Foundation reports arson at Jaffa mosque

July 20, 2010 11:44 A.M. (Updated: July 20, 2010 8:15 P.M.)
Bethlehem – Ma'an – Arson was behind a fire targeting the ancient western door of the Hassan Beik Mosque in the coastal city of Jaffa on Tuesday, the Al-Aqsa Foundation for Islamic Heritage and Endowments reported.

The perpetrators have yet to be identified, the foundation said, but suggested that Israeli extremists were behind the attack.

The foundation stated that eyewitnesses said three men were seen setting fire to a plastic cover attached to the door of the mosque before fleeing the scene. Worshipers who arrived for the early morning prayer put out the fire, the foundation added.

Al-Aqsa Foundation chief Zaki Aghbariyya condemned the assault. “This is not the first time Jewish extremists attempt to torch the Hassan Beik Mosque. Israeli security usually takes no action to reveal the perpetrators, and thus we hold the Israeli government responsible for this assault and any similar assaults in the future.”
