Report: Hezbollah cancels bid to kill Israel official

June 22, 2010 5:37 P.M. (Updated: June 23, 2010 1:11 P.M.)
Bethlehem - Ma'an/Agencies - Hezbollah planned to kill an Israeli official but the plan was dropped following Israel's navy raid on a Gaza-bound aid flotilla, Arab media reported Wednesday.

The Kuwaiti newspaper Al-Rai, quoting a source close to the Hezbollah command, reported that the plan was scrapped because the group did not want to divert attention from the deadly attack on the flotilla, the Beirut-based newswire Now Lebanon reported.

The source also said Hezbollah has a plan in place to retaliate for any Israeli attempt to assassinate its Secretary-General Hassan Nasrallah or any other senior party official, Al-Rai reported.

Lebanese singer 'banned' from Gaza mission

Hezbollah, meanwhile, has banned Lebanese singer Haifa Wehbe from participating in an all-woman fleet scheduled to set sail from Beirut to Gaza in the coming days, British media reported earlier this week.

The Guardian reported that Wehbe's request to join the vessel was vetoed by Hezbollah because her "nudity, degradation and immodest dress" would damage the reputations of the Arab and European women on board.

Organizers of the all-woman vessel have denied Israeli allegations that the new fleet attempting to break the siege has links with Hezbollah, which fought a month-long battle with Israel in the summer of 2006.
